Kenya:HIV Prevention Project Volunteering Program.

Facts About This Program

Kenya:HIV Prevention Project Volunteering Program.

HIV/AIDS is a deadly virus which is widespread in Kenya. Many people, especially in rural areas where there is a severe lack of medical services, have to deal with HIV/AIDS on a daily basis. There is a lack of manpower and resources in the local hospitals to treat and help these patients, and an urgent need for volunteers. The effort put forth by volunteers like you will help change the lives of many poor and HIV-infected people in Kenya.

HIV affects a high number of Kenyans, and recent breakthroughs in medicine and support often don’t reach those in the most need. Agape works with a number of local projects helping to tackle this issue, but they often rely on external help to ensure that their efforts are as wide-reaching as possible

Upon joining Travellers Africa’s Kenya HIV/AIDS volunteer program, your tasks will include counseling, visiting patients and their families, and participating in public awareness activities to help prevent the spread of future infections.

Sadly, Kenya has a severe, generalized HIV epidemic. And there is a critical lack of manpower and resources in the healthcare sector, especially in smaller local hospitals located in more remote and rural areas. With the country struggling with HIV/AIDS, they desperately need volunteers to fill this manpower gap.

While volunteering in Kenya with HIV project, you will help spread awareness of the infection and how to prevent it, work closely with doctors in treating those infected and provide hope and counseling to people who feel otherwise neglected by society.

You will also provide tips to patients on health, nutrition, and sanitation, and keep patient records. Work responsibilities vary depending on your education, skills, and experience.

What will I be doing?

As an HIV volunteer in Kenya, you will be working in local clinics and community outreach programs, carrying out tests, counseling sufferers on home visits, and engaging in community education projects. You will spend time in a local clinic administering tests and helping to analyze results. You will also engage in counseling as we provide people with their results – this work can be challenging but is vital to the long-term eradication of HIV. We also conduct home visits for sufferers, administering much-needed medication and pastoral care, and you may be asked to assist with this.
HIV care and prevention provides a set of unique challenges, and Agape is also delighted to offer all of our volunteers the chance to take part in the internationally recognized HTC course. This course will train you in safe practice when dealing with sufferers, including for testing, and also introduce you to the key ideas in HIV counseling and community education. This course is perfect for those interested in making a real difference in Kenya, whilst gaining valuable a valuable skill set and qualification for their future.

Volunteers are generally expected to work at their placement five days a week. Weekday mornings will start with breakfast with other volunteers at our volunteer house before you head off to work. Working on our HIV programme brings unique challenges every day, but you’ll often start out at a local clinic, helping to administer tests. We also run regular counseling and education projects, and you’re likely to be asked to assist with these.

You will generally finish your placement at around 5pm, though this will depend on the day. When you finish you’ll get a chance to unwind with other volunteers and local team members over dinner, and we often organize games and activities of our own in the evenings.

Most of our volunteers in Kenya live in our purpose-built volunteer house, supervised and run by our local team. Living in our volunteer house is great fun, and provides the perfect balance between getting involved in a big Kenyan family, and having the opportunity to relax with other like-minded volunteers.

You will most likely be sharing dorm-style rooms with other volunteers, and these are typically single-sex. We also have some private rooms available. Other facilities at the volunteer house include a roof terrace with a barbecue, games room, and plenty of communal space for games and activities.

Travellers Africa offers a variety of extra Adventures for volunteers in Kenya including Maasai Mara safarishiking and biking trips through beautiful national parks, and weekend getaways to tropical beaches on the Indian Ocean.
