1. ABOUT TRAVELLERS AFRICA
Who We Are: Travellers Africa is a locally owned volunteer, travel, and cultural exchange organization based in Arusha, Tanzania. We place international volunteers in impactful community projects across Arusha, Moshi, and Zanzibar.
Our Mission: To provide affordable, meaningful, and ethical volunteer programs that directly support grassroots communities. Alongside volunteer work, we curate unforgettable Tanzanian travel experiences, including:
- Serengeti & Ngorongoro safaris
- Mount Kilimanjaro treks
- Cultural tours in Arusha & Moshi
- Zanzibar beach holidays
Our Local Team: All team members undergo training in volunteer supervision, first aid, safety, cultural orientation, and child protection.
2. APPLICATION PROCESS
How to Apply: You can apply via our online application form or by requesting a downloadable copy.
Placement: We match you with a project based on your skills, preferences, program availability, and community needs. Once approved, you will receive:
- Project details & Host family introduction
- Pre-departure guide
- Airport pick-up instructions
- Local coordinator contact information
3. BEFORE YOU TRAVEL
We recommend preparing at least 4–6 weeks before travel:
- Read our Pre-Departure Handbook.
- Arrange vaccinations and secure travel insurance.
- Apply for a Tanzanian visa.
- Book flights (Kilimanjaro International Airport is preferred).
- Send us your flight itinerary for pick-up arrangement.
Travel Insurance (Required): Must cover medical emergencies, evacuation, theft, and adventure activities.

4. ARRIVAL IN TANZANIA
Where to Arrive:
- ✈ Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): Best for Arusha & Moshi programs.
- ✈ Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ): For Zanzibar placements.
Airport Pick-Up: A representative will meet you with a sign displaying your name (flight details must be shared in advance).
When to Arrive: Plan to arrive one day before the program start date.
5. ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Where Volunteers Stay: You will stay with trusted host families, in volunteer guesthouses, or project-based accommodation. Expect basic but comfortable conditions:
- Private or shared bedrooms with mosquito nets.
- Shared bathrooms and safe drinking water provided.
- Families are warm, welcoming, and carefully screened.
Meals: Breakfast and dinner (local Tanzanian cuisine) are provided daily. Dietary needs can be accommodated if requested in advance.
6. VISA INFORMATION
Most travelers begin with a Tourist Visa (90 days). Once in Tanzania, volunteers apply for the official Volunteer Permit (Class C).
Volunteer Permit Requirements:
- Passport copy & 6 photos
- CV / Resume & Completed forms
- Placement letter (provided by us)
- Fee (2025): $250 USD (Paid directly to Immigration Office)
7. HEALTH & SAFETY
- General Tips: Drink bottled water, avoid street food, and use mosquito repellent.
- Vaccinations: Consult a travel clinic. Common needs: Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies, Malaria prophylaxis, and Yellow Fever (if required).
- Safety: Travellers Africa provides 24/7 support. Avoid walking alone at night and keep valuables secured.
8. MONEY & BUDGETING
- Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). USD is accepted for major transactions.
- ATMs: Available in major towns. Bring backup cash for power outages.
- Budget Estimate: $10–$20/day for personal expenses. Safaris and tours require a separate budget.
9. COMMUNICATION
- Local SIM cards (Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo) are inexpensive.
- WhatsApp is the easiest way to communicate.
- Wi-Fi is available in major towns and internet cafés.
10. PROJECTS & COMMUNITY IMPACT
Arusha & Moshi: Teaching, childcare, women empowerment, medical outreach, environmental conservation, special needs support, animal welfare.
Zanzibar: Marine conservation, community education, beach clean-ups, sports development, sustainable tourism support.
11. MATERIALS TO BRING
- Passport & travel documents
- Travel insurance certificate
- Lightweight clothing (modest options for rural areas)
- Mosquito repellent, sunscreen, toiletries
- Closed shoes & reusable water bottle
- Flashlight/headlamp & Power adapter (Type G/D)
Optional Donations: School supplies, books, toys, clothes, sports equipment, first-aid items.
12. ABOUT TANZANIA
Culture: Tanzania is peaceful and diverse with over 120 ethnic groups. Key values include respect, greetings, community, and hospitality.
Language: Swahili is the national language. Learning basic phrases is highly recommended.
Travel Opportunities: We organize safaris, waterfall hikes, hot springs trips, and cultural experiences.
